Cherie Morgan

Founder & Director of Flamencollab, Principal Dancer, Flamenco Dance Teacher

TRAINING:

Cherie Morgan began dancing at the age of 2, where she started Ballet and continued with the RAD syllabus through her school years. Moving to Sydney at the age of 10, she was introduced to the Spanish Dance Society syllabus and trained in classical Spanish Dance with Hillary Kaplan at Ecole and later at Alegria Dance School. After returning to Melbourne she began flamenco classes with Johnny Tedesco and Chari Saldana and later with Laura Uhe through her teen years.

At 19, Cherie moved to Madrid and spent most of her 20’s living in various parts of Spain. She has trained extensively at Amor de Dios in Madrid and La Fundacion Cristina Heeren in Seville. Here she trained with some of the very best flamenco dancers such as La Truco, Miguel Cañas, Carmela Greco, Milagros Menjibar, Luisa Palacio, Javier Baron and Carmen Ledesma.
Cherie also trained rigorously in other dance and performance styles, attending APO Arts Academy in Melbourne for 2 years full-time. Here she obtained a Diploma of Dance (Techniques) and a Diploma of Arts (Music Theatre). During this time, Cherie also became a qualified personal trainer and fitness instructor which she has found extremely useful in understanding the body and the importance of strength, conditioning and fitness.

In 2018, Cherie spent the year in Sydney working under mentorship with acclaimed flamenco dancer Pepa Molina, forming part of her performance group ‘Las Flamenkas’. A year of intense learning, Cherie pinpoints this time as being the most important in her formation as a flamenco teacher, thanks to her gran maestra.

PERFORMANCE:

Cherie began performing dance, drama and music at a young age, finding any opportunity to be on stage.

Her first flamenco gig was in 2011, where she toured regional Victoria with classical Spanish guitarist Matthew Fagan and fellow flamenco dancer Aya Kitaoji.

Whilst studying flamenco full-time in Seville, Cherie paid for her classes by busking and singing at a jazz bar in Calle Betis. In 2014, she got her first chance to dance flamenco solo in Spain where she was invited to perform as a part of the ‘Miercoles a

Compas’ season at La Cartuja Monastery (Seville).

In 2018 whilst living in Sydney, Cherie performed at numerous events and festivals with Pepa Molina's Performance Group, 'Las Flamenkas'. Upon arriving back to Melbourne in September 2019, Cherie performed for a two month residency at MEIGAS restaurant with artist Alejandro Flores.

Cherie and her Flamencollab Performance Group made their debut this year (2021) to an excited crowd at "La Feria Spanish Festival" and are set to perform at Melbourne Fringe Festival this coming October.
