Flamencollab's Core Values
At Flamencollab, it is important that all students understand our core values. They are what we represent and what unite us:

Community.
We are kind and respectful to our fellow students. We welcome people from all walks of life, diverse cultural backgrounds and are proud LGBTQIA+ allies. We strive to lift each other up and look out for one another.

Collaboration.
Flamenco is such an intricate and complicated art form that we can't possibly learn it all from one source! At Flamencollab we respect all other flamenco artists and are open to working with and learning from those who help us to grow in knowledge and experience.

Performance.
At Flamencollab we are dedicated to providing performance opportunities to our students. On stage is where we learn the most, it is where we put our many hours in the studio to practical use, building confidence in ourselves as performers and camaraderie amongst our peers. Let's spread our passion and love of flamenco with our Melbourne audience!

Positivity.
The studio is a place where we can leave our day-to-day worries behind and connect with our inner flamenca/o! We support and encourage eachother, bringing our smiles, positive energy and sense of fun to class. With our hard work in the studio, we are also rewarded with a positive sense of accomplishment.

Why Flamenco?

Flamenco is a UNESCO Heritage listed art form, traditional to the gypsies of Andalusia.

Its roots trace back to the 19th Century, carrying pieces of Indian, Arabic and Spanish culture.

Through years of cross-cultural interchange, flamenco has gradually transformed into how we know it today. It continues to inspire awe in people of all ages and walks of life.

Who are we?

Cherie Morgan

Cherie Morgan

"We" is me, Cherie Morgan, and all of you, students past, present and future. Flamencollab was born in the beginning of 2019, when myself and dancer, Jessica MacCallum-Cruz, decided to create a performance group. We'd met in 2014, whilst studying full-time flamenco dance at Fundacion Cristina Heeren in Sevilla, and formed a tight bond. When our paths crossed again years later back in Melbourne, we reminisced about our time in Spain, the sights the smells, the culture, the vibrancy! A flame was ignited and we set about preparing a line-up of gigs, hoping to share that distinct Andalusian atmosphere with the Australian public.

Fast forward to the end of 2020 and Flamencollab had made a complete transformation! The arrival of the Coronavirus epidemic threw a spanner in the works as all gigs we had booked for the year were cancelled. I decided I needed to fight for Flamencollab, go within and ask myself what was really important. Performances? Yes, of course. But not just for myself, for my community. I began running flamenco classes online and connecting with wonderful humans I may not have come across otherwise. The months of online classes and physical separation only fuelled my desire to connect with others and share my love of flamenco with them. Community is number one. We can achieve so much if we are united and share a common goal.

I would like to play a small part in helping to
bring the magical art form of Flamenco to Australian audiences, sharing the love of Spanish Gypsy culture.

I am honoured to present to you, Flamencollab.

¡Gracias a todos!

“Cherie dances with a passion and energy that is at the heart of flamenco. You can’t help but be dragged into her flame”.

-Carmen Mitchell

"Traditional Flamenco that took me straight back to the streets of Seville. Would definitely recommend for a unique night out!"-
